I chose to go to AUT as for what I was after as a sport student it seemed the most appealing place to be in NZ. The facilities there are of really good quality when it comes to sports, and what they have on the website is truthful.
In addition to good facilities (sport specific), the lectures in the programs were really helpful. However, my main gripe about the whole experience was that, as a student, it felt like the uni did not care about me. The way AUT is structured, the campus is separated across three different locations, with each location focusing on a specific aspect of study, right? Nah, wrong, North Campus, aside from having some good stuff, was a waste land. There was no student life at all. AUT only seemed to care about their city campus, and that's it. All my mates felt left out, and there might be a BBQ once in a blue moon.
AUT has no student culture, could not have been more boring in this aspect, ended up going to UOA for clubs, and in comparison to UC AUT was bad.
A lot my poor experiences stemmed from this, however, as a student at AUT it feels like they just want to steal your money.
My friend had a really poor experience trying to get into AUT. As out-of-towners we both had to move into halls of residence, and had no easy means of communicating with the uni at the start. Long story short, they only informed her 1 week before starting that her course had been cancelled completely, had to struggle to get the deposited back from the halls of residence, and her life was turned upside down within the space of 2 hours on the day she was set to move to Auckland. Fortunelty UC after one phone call had her in the course of her choice, and in an affordable Halls of residence and tried to help her family with getting to Christchurch all within the space of 2 phone calls. I can only ephaise how terrifying that experience must have been, but Im so thankful that UC sorted this out.
Also you end up teaching yourself everything until 3rd year, everything is recorded and 2 years old, so your paying like a grand + for course that you can learn from a book it feels.
Rant over, would not recommend
Overall
I chose AUT because:
- Good location that is easy to get to by car or public transport
- More practical work
- More technology-based and access to good equipment + facilities
- Better support for students, I didn't feel like just a number
I chose BCT (Bachelor of Creative Technologies) because:
- I had no idea what I wanted to do out of highschool besides work with some type of technology
What I hadn't realized before I started was that because it was a relatively new degree at the time, there was restructuring every year I studied. This was both good and bad because it allowed us to have a say in the degree and how it was run but the downside was if you had an unpopular recommendation or wanted different timing for classes it'd get overruled.
Because of the nature of the degree it is based on mainly projects rather than little assignments, and you get to research into a concept that interests you and incorporate that into a project with some kind of technology (app, vr/ar, art installation etc). This was really helpful as it allows you to either find your passion in one area of technology or branch out and try a bit of everything - and I did the latter. The only downside to this was because it was self or group led, it was up to you to stay on track and the degree as a whole had very little structure. Aside from that, the teachers are all from different areas e.g technology/art/engineering/entrepreneurship which provided a lot of different knowledge & views on everything and were all so passionate about what they do.
I was fortunate when taking my degree that they allowed us to take a minor from Art & Design, and so I now minor in Motion Capture. This led to my current employment at a well known film company.
My previous job was also related to my degree, and I went through AUT's employment staff to get the job and they were so helpful (like giving me pointers on my CV because it was awful).
Overall
The only programme in Auckland that offered physiotherapy. Very close to home and short commute
Travel times were short, availability of a gym for students to use, laid back student environment were things that I enjoyed
Small campus empty most of the time, no student culture and very few food options around campus were things I didn't like
Overall
My experience at AUT was definitely a highlight of my life and I look back at it fondly.
I would say that the learning experience is only higher than average because of the variability between lecturers of different courses. However AUT as a uni provided me the space and opportunity to create relationships and memories that I would otherwise not have had the chance to.
Overall
Chose this because it provides a practical view on things. I like the connections that the university has as well to aid in job search in The future. There are definitely room for improvement especially in finding an internship or graduate role jobs but all in all I enjoyed my time there.
Overall
I studied at AUT as a mature student and choose Auckland to be close to my daughter. Also, AUT offered the specific course that I was interested in.
The general atmosphere was good. The students and staff were friendly and supportive.
Sometimes I wondered if the course content was relevant but after working in the coreesponding proffesion I found out that it was.
The quality of teaching was variable. As a mature student I may have had high expectations for the value I was getting for my money.
Placements were a bit of a lottery. If you didn't get along with your supervisor you could have a hard time.
Overall pretty good. It must have been OK because I went back a few years later to do a post grad course.

My main reason for studying at AUT was because they offered a bachelor's degree for the subject i wanted to do. I'd say the overall vibe of the uni at the time was great. I joined a club which made my uni years pretty special and memorable. Overall good experience :)
Overall
I was previously enrolled at Auckland University for a few weeks in their Computer Science program however I quickly made the switch to Auckland University of Technology (AUT) after realising the way the program was structured and what I heard from friends about it being better.
The course at AUT was great and I enjoyed the practical approach they had to IT. With coding especially I found was easier to learn and apply at AUT compared to Auckland where they made you write down code on paper. Since the lab classes were also smaller, I felt that I could easily get support/help from tutors on problems I had with my work.
Another great thing about this course was the project I got in the last year where I could experience what it was like to apply IT to a real world problem. It also looked great in my CV and I was able to get great connections and a good referee from the people I worked with!
What I didn't really like...
I think the way they taught their Networking courses need to be improved. It is great that they offer CCNA qualifications as lots of employers look for this however the way that it was taught, truly sucks. To me, they made networking sound boring, complicated and drown you in hours of lab exercises which only discourage you more from the subject. Perhaps it was just my particular tutor though. Currently, I work in a role where I need this technical knowledge and have learnt alot of it through "on the job" experience. I gained so much interest in the subject and I think I would've realised it sooner, had I not been put off from the subject through my uni courses.
A few other great things...
Another thing I should mention is that AUT offers an AUT Edge Award which I am not sure many people knew of. Anyone can get it. But basically you attend a bunch of employability workshops, do leadership activites and 50 hours of volunteer work. I remember squeezing it all into my last year but eventually I achieved it! Honestly besides the flex it gives you in your CV, the experience was so helpful in developing my career mindset and I don't think I would've gotten that from any other university.
Lastly, they provided alot of great career support at their student hub. They even have something called TalentHub which apparently not many students know about. This is how I got my first job. They basically refer you for free and land you a job if you meet the requirements. I don't think I would've been able to land this in the bigger universities where I would've had to compete with literally 100s of other smart compsci students!
Overall
i chose this institution due to better environment compared to previous institution i studied at. the atmosphere for students and attitudes of lecturers are a lot differen and better in my opinion. AUT provides immense support for their students, and have compassion for their students. it also provides substantial practical learning to support the theoretical stuff. i thoroughly enjoyed studying here and would highly recommend to other students pursuing their studies.
Overall
I chose AUT to study nursing because they do more practical learning than theoretical learning (eg: UoA). I also took a previous course before nursing which was also under AUT. Hence, it was easier to transfer papers during the application and the campus is closer to home (North Shore).
I like how its far from the city (= less distraction), has their own clinics with special student discounts, gym and sports centre. I didnt like their food options much in the cafeteria. Its very limited .
